Tips For Your Upcoming Newborn Session

Welcoming a newborn into the world is a beautiful and exciting occasion, and capturing those precious early moments is something every parent cherishes! A newborn session is the perfect way to create lasting memories. To make sure that your session goes smoothly and results in beautiful photos, it’s important to prepare adequately. I have put together this post to help you get ready for your upcoming session!

Choosing the Right Location for Your Newborn Session

One of the first decisions you’ll need to make is whether to have your newborn session at home or in a studio! A studio offers several advantages, including better lighting conditions and the convenience of not having to clean your home. Studios also provide ample space, which can be perfect for capturing stunning images. If you prefer an intimate environment, having the session at home can be equally rewarding. Typically, the nursery, living room, or bedroom are the ideal spaces for the session. In this case, you only need to tidy up the areas that will be in the pictures, allowing for a more relaxed environment. Both options have their unique benefits, so choose the one that best suits your family’s needs!

Preparing Outfits for the Session

When it comes to dressing your baby for the session, variety is important. It’s a good idea to have a few outfits ready in case of accidents or to add some diversity to the photos. Opt for clothing that’s easy to change, such as a zip-up onesie or a swaddle. Avoid outfits that go over the head, as they may disturb your little one’s peace! The goal is to keep your baby comfortable and content throughout the session, to ensure that they remain calm and cooperative!

Prepping The Baby For The Session

A peaceful, sleeping baby is perfect for a newborn session, as it allows for easy positioning and capturing those adorable poses! To help your baby relax during the session, try to keep them awake for about two hours beforehand. Feeding or bathing them just before I arrive can help them fall asleep. Additionally, keep a warm environment in your home to keep your baby cozy. You can use a space heater in the nursery to ensure a comfortable temperature. This warmth not only helps your baby sleep but also makes them more “pliable,” allowing the photographer to gently position them for those heartwarming shots.

Some Extra Tips For Your Newborn Session!

In addition to the main points, I mentioned above, here are some extra tips to make your newborn session a success:

  • Communicate with your photographer: Discuss your preferences and any specific shots you want to capture. A good photographer will be open to your ideas and offer suggestions based on their experience!
  • Relax and enjoy the moment: Newborn sessions can take time, and patience is very important. Trust your photographer to work their magic while you focus on enjoying this special time with your baby.
  • Plan the session at the right time: It is super important that you feel safe, secure and comfortable in your home with your new baby! So, my recommendation is to schedule your newborn session about 2 weeks after giving birth. That way you have time to get home and get settled (ish)!! Plus, it also comes before baby acne arrives and before they hit a growth spurt.
